doesnt he die in the last book, i say it is a brave man to stand up to a powerful foe and lie to their face, and furthermore have them believe it. and snape kills dumbledore
While I always wished (and will again) that he washed his hair, I can see goodness in snape, even when he is appears to be so sly and challenging to children, especially Harry.
He was Teacher of Potions, right? A difficult and dangerous class that needed to be done right, and he let Hermione collect bits she wanted… I also believe he watched and guarded the son of the Marauders when they all went around in the invisible cloak, around school.
He did the same thing when the three were on the run in their invisible tent and whatnot, he sent the silver doe patronus to warn them when they were in a lot of trouble. he did many things in both HP6 and HP7, esp. in chapter 34 in book 7. Also HP had watched the episode of V’s killing of Snape, and so admired Snape the more. It’s like Snape was a good protector and a great double agent.
That’s what I think, how about you?
He was incredibly brave, to lie to Voldemort for all that time. Knowing that if there was ever a whiff, Voldemort would torture him until the truth came out. He was very brave and I’ve always had a soft spot for him, I think mostly because he was played by Alan Rickman. One of my favorite actors.
Yes, definitely. And he’s the most complicated character in the series. Aside from being a double agent against probably the greatest evil wizard of all, what he did out of love for Lily is a brave thing — protecting Harry and following Dumbledore’s orders till the end is a brave act indeed. I agree with Harry that he is the bravest man. Even Dumbledore, in choosing his manner of death, showed fear of dying through the Horcrux’s curse. Even when faced with imminent death, Snape still hung on to life to give Harry his sliver of memories, not so much to vindicate himself but so Harry would understand what he needs to do.
Being complicated, Snape cannot be simply put as either good or evil. He is a hero, but a flawed hero just the same. However much he loved Lily and swore on his life to protect her son, his hatred of James was not eradicated and was manifested by his nastiness towards Harry throughout the series.
The good side of him, he has used his skills and position to help Harry and even Lupin, George (though he lost an ear), Ginny, Luna and Neville (by giving them detention with Hagrid where they’d be safe). He recognized authority in Dumbledore and followed his instructions even if he wasn’t told the reason for everything. And he kept his word, when the time came to kill Dumbledore, he did it. Everything he did to make Harry safe and to help him in his quest in the end was in keeping with his word to Dumbledore.
I believe he could have been good under a different circumstances (i.e., childhood and school years). But alas, if that was so, the series would be one interesting character short.
I think he was one of the bravest. Working as double agent knowing that Voldemort could kill him on a whim. Agreeing to watch over the child of his nemesis must ahve been difficult too, even though he loved Lily.
He probably resented Harry a bit, and he let that be known so no one would ever suspect his true mission. I was thinking in Prisoner of Azkaban, when they all come out of the shrieking shack, and Snape is about to chastise them all, werewolf Lupin roars and he quickly pushes all three of them behind him to protect them.
I think he had a very hard path to tread and he walked it to the end, knowing there would really be no reward for him, other than honoring his love and memory of Lily.
Harry had a difficult path, but his life was the reward at the end.
