A great literary villain can be almost pure evil. Many villains are highly complex and seemingly lost in their amorality. Villains are twisted, dark, and evil.
Random House Dictionary defines a villain as “a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness and crime; a scoundrel; or a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot.”
Villains are normally very frightening, chaotic, and impulsive. All good literary villains are fairly vocal about their sinister plans and motivations. They also tend to be very impulsive in their actions, which in the end, almost certainly will bring about their doom.
Almost all villains have a deep, dark past that has helped turned them into the sociopath they are today. In reality, sociopaths are very rare and very noticeable, if you’re looking that is, because they simply don’t behave like normal people.
A great literary villain will have aspects of his personality that subtly remind you that they are still human and a part of them is torn by their actions and evil doing. Creating a more sympathetic villain will add complexity to your story and make the readers love him even more.
Some examples of great literary villains are:
Darth Vader, from Star Wars
Lord Valdemort, from Harry Potter
Lago, from Shakespeare’s Othello
Sauron, from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Hannibal Lecter, from the Silence of the Lambs movies
And a more recent addition to the list of great movie villains is:
Colonel Landa, from Inglourious Bastards
These characters make great literary villains because they strike fear in the hearts of readers and viewers with their dark, menacing ways and seem to be the true embodiment of evil because they have zero remorse for any evil they have ever done.
There is a second type of villain, one that is far more tragic than the pure evil villain. These villains are much more self-aware and intelligent and come across as similar to everyday people. They normally have a history, or back story that makes you feel for them instead of just hating them outright as you would an “evil” villain.
Villains help make a story interesting. Without a villain, or opposing character, what would there be for your hero to do?
A secret of most good villains is that they have a lot of similarities to the hero of the story, down to their very nature. Keep this in mind during the next movie you watch, or next book you read and see if you can tell the difference.

When I was a naughty boy, Harry Potter was my favorite book. From time to time, I imitated Harry to wear a pair of glasses, hold a stick and speak incantations which were funny enough to others, or ride a broom, running on the lawn front of house.
“Wingardium Leviosa”, I liked to speak the incantation and pointed to some stuff such as a book on a desk, a cup on a table or even a person on a chair although it did not work. Besides it, I also could tell some other incantations just like Alohomora to try to open a door and Locomotor Mortis to hold down someone’s legs.
When I was eight years old, I had my greatest Halloween Eve and I got my favorite glasses from my mother as a present which was so familiar with Harry. Wearing the glasses and my father’s large dust coat and holding a stick, I tried to play Harry as similar as possible.
At first I even wanted to use my stick to change the pumpkin to a Jack-O -Lantern which was with a charming smile. Actually I used a knife and finished the lantern finally. As the curtain of night enveloped the world, I took the lantern and went out with many children. With oddly masks, we called out that trick or treat and we could get candies and chocolate mostly.
If we received nothing, I would use the stick to point to their cat and try to change its color. As a matter of a fact, it did not work. And then my comates would laugh at me and wipe soap at the doorknob. The most popular game was bobbing for apples which were interesting and exciting for us children. When my turn came, I gripped an apple with great strength while my glasses were wet with water, so funny. Maybe I should use the stick to get an apple.
What a funny Halloween I had with a pair of glasses and the attire. Happy Halloween, though those incantations did not work. However I enjoyed enough.
Infographic reveals key iPad insights
Like them or not, but infographics are popular for highlighting key points without boring you to death with endless numbers and meaningless charts. Take these iPad insights by mobile advertising company Mobclix distilled down to a single image. This is how all surveys should be done, if you ask me. All we need from market [...]
I know it would be pure speculation, I was just wondering what everyone out there thought. I would lean towards a phoenix (maybe a little too obvious).

2007 is drawing near for us to greet and along with the coming of the year, major film companies are also set to bring more excitement in cinematic experience as numbers of blockbuster, highly-anticipated film features have neatly been lined up for moviegoers to enjoy and cherish on throughout.
The first to lead the pack starting in May on date 4, “Spider-Man 3″ still sees Tobey Maguire as the web-swinging superhero who this time has to face the battle of his life against two of the most feared villains ever, Venom and Sandman. Exactly two weeks from it, arrives CG animated “Shrek the Third” which finds the titular character (Mike Myers) and his wife Fiona (Cameron Diaz) getting involved in the search of an heir to rule the kingdom of Far, Far Away. Near the end of the month on date 25 comes “Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End” that once again unites Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann for one last decisive battle in a titanic showdown against Lord Cutler Beckett, Davy Jones, and Admiral James Norrington.
Proceeding to the month of June, date 15 will witness the return of our four unique heroes namely Mr. Fantastic, the Human Torch, Invisible Woman, and The Thing in “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” to meet their greatest challenge yet in the form of the enigmatic, intergalactic herald The Silver Surfer. Meanwhile, less than one month on July 13, teen wizard Harry Potter is back to lead his peers defend themselves against the dark forces threatening them and the entire wizarding community upon the rise of the evil Lord Voldemort in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”
While those sequels mentioned above undoubtedly will draw most attention from the audience, sure there are a lot of new titles worth to be checked out during the year. From epic genre, Zack Snyder’s “300″ certainly is one picture hard to miss out as it opens in cinemas on March 9. Featuring ensemble cast consisting of Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, and David Wenham, this adaptation of Frank Miller’s popular graphic novel is going to bring amazement with its stunning depiction of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae. From animated field, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, the first all CG animated movie in the history of the franchise, and Disney/Pixar’s “Ratatouille” obviously will be two good options to spend more time in theaters when they arrive on March 23 and June 29, respectively.
For those who rather prefer sci-fi adventure genre, do take a look at DreamWorks’ “Transformers” which will unspool in cinemas exactly on the fourth day of July as Americans celebrate their Independence Day. Presenting young cast like Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Rachael Taylor in leading roles under the direction of renowned filmmaker Michael Bay, this fact only has given the picture a fresh take along with a promise of full-packed action scenes to make a great combination for an enjoyable cinematic work. As for the fantasy-genre fans, no need to be disappointed for New Line Cinema will bring up another potential trilogy after the huge success of “Lord of the Rings” series. Based on Philip Pullman’s books “His Dark Materials”, the first of the adaptations, “His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass”, indeed is a must-see feature as it hits the theaters on December 7 judging from its engaging story and stellar cast comprised of Nicole Kidman, Eva Green, and Daniel Craig.

It brings a smile to my face when I think of the children’s anticipation the days running up to Halloween. We all love to follow tradition and dress up at this time of year; but for them, it’s really something else when they can imitate their favorite characters for the day. With so many new licensed costumes coming out every year, there is always enough choice for you and your children to make this Halloween as fun and memorable as the last.
Many of the costume ideas this year are getting their inspiration from the leading movies such as Harry Potter and Transformers. To stay with the current trends, look at the following suggestions that will have your little ones screaming with joy (or rather fear!)
As mentioned previously, this year’s release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince has given us a huge array of costumes. Full of wizardry, magic, and fantasy, there is something for every taste. Harry Potter himself will no doubt be at the forefront with his robe embroidered with the Gryffindor emblem, Windsor-style glasses and magic wand. The range of accessories are just as great as the costume itself – Hermione Granger wigs, Quidditch accessories, and not forgetting our feathery friend Hedwig the owl.
If Harry Potter doesn’t tickle their fancy, what about Bumblebee? Let your child ‘transform’ into this small yellow robot, the favorite character for the young, with his wisecracks and risk taking. Typically coming in the form of a yellow jumpsuit with chest piece, a toy arm weapon, and realistic mask, your child will be focus of all their friends!
For the girls, a popular choice is the Monster’s Bride costumes. Something old, something mean, something borrowed, something green! Costumes are characterized with a white dress, black stitching and patches, a black lace-up bodice and green top hat.
Don’t let all the fun of choosing adorable outfits allow you to forget one of the most important aspects of Halloween – safety. Always keep in mind the safety of your child especially when choosing costumes that could be hazardous. The last thing you want is any real-life horror, so stick to costumes that are fire-resistant and quick to remove. If your child is venturing out to ‘trick or treat’, make sure their clothing can be seen in the dark. Your child wants to turn heads just as you do, but they need to be comfortable and if their ensemble requires a mask, fitting it properly so that they can see through it is a must.
It might be good practice to speak with your children before the night gets under way. With so many candles and torches around, it’s best to be safe. Costumes should never be made from paper or highly flammable materials. Polyester is a more sensible option and that goes for any hats and wigs too. Remind them of the dangers of fire, what to do if their clothing catches on flame, and what precautions to take.
